Thanks to the posters who mentioned the red combs and wattles....pretty sure now that it was one of the BSL's. Gotta get those nest boxes up....I thought I had time. I just changed their light to 14 hours a few days ago. Apparently the 20 degree weather doesn't bother my ladies. Can't wait to go down a little later and egg hunt again.

Also, pick up the hen by the feet and let her get sleepy. Then fondle her little feathers until you can feel her public* bone, which should be about 2cm under thevent towards the breast bone. If the bones are 1 finger apart, she's not your layer. If it's 1 1/2 fingers apart, she's about to lay. If it's 2 fingers apart - you got your girl.

That's also a good trick when you're on a farm and want a laying hen but the little *** farmer is trying to sell you point-of-lays instead

CONGRATULATIONS.

Edit: Pubic, not public... but I guess with your hand all up in there it can be public, too.

Thanks for the info! I don't think I'm brave enough to hang everyone to check pubic bones. I'm pretty sure that it's my large BSL since her comb and wattles are bright red and huge, while everyone else is still a pale color....could be wrong though. But, now that I've got one egg, I'm willing to wait for the rest. Hung the nest boxes today so hopefully they will use them instead of the floor. No egg today though.

It's here!!!

Sophia broke the seal and was the first to lay an egg today. She's exactly 21 weeks and two days old.

She was the last one out of the coop this morning, but when i checked the nest box...no egg. While I was cleaning the main part of the coop this AM, she kept heading up to the nest box area, scratching the floor and settling in, and her butt feathers would ripple a bit...but other birds kept hanging around so she left...only to return. And leave. But when she came back to the nest box, she would try to roll the fake ceramic eggs underneath her.

I closed up the coop, went to Starbucks...and had a strong "mother's intuition" that when I came back, I'd see THIS:

The real egg is in the middle...the other, larger ones are the ceramic fakes from McMurray.

Though I kept them out of the nest boxes for months, they have started sleeping (and pooping) there now...I am trying to break them of this habit to no avail.

Much nicer to see on the grass...
