when will she lay?

hi, we have two ducks a female and a male. They're around 5 months old, both Kaki Campbell. This is our first time having ducks. I read that they can start laying as soon as 5 months old and they have been mating recently. The last two days are girl has been laying down a lot and our male has been "guarding" her. I'm sure this is normal, but he has also pbeen chasing our chickens if they get too close to her. Are there any clues as to when a duck may start laying eggs? Thanks in advance!

Frequent visits to the nesting box, distended abdomen, interests in oyster shells, are all signs she may lay soon.

Sorry I should have made it more clear. I ment to say that when she lays down he is over protective. We have only seen them mating two times.
