I have a roost in the brooder and there are a couple chicks that tries to sleep on it. It's funny to watch them fall asleep, their heads slowly droops down, sometimes hitting the floor.

Generally, at what age do they figure out how to wing tuck their head?

mine are almost 3 weeks and they have just started inconsistently tucking. Mostly they still drop to the ground. On more than one occasion i have wondered if they are alive only to have them pop their little heads up at a little noise.

Three of our four four-month-old pullets obviously have figured out what to do with the head when they're on the roost...the fourth just kind of dangles it down, and it looks really uncomfortable. Maybe it's just a growing thing.

I found some of my 1 week old BO chicks tucking their head under their wing. They were sleeping on the floor of the brooder under the light...perhaps they were trying to shade their eyes.

My 4 week old sex-links have begun to tuck their head under their wing while on the roost.

Our three oldest are around a month, and they figured it out at random intervals during the past few weeks. We have just recently started putting them in 'natural' light by moving them to the guest room and letting the sun dictate the hours of light. It's funny to sneak in around 6 in the morning and see them all tucked-up.

We also have two ten-day old Wellies that still have yet to figure it out. They do lay down, but it's still amusing to watch the eyes close and the head droop slowly down.
