When you candle how long does it usually take for your temps to

It will depend a lot on what type of machine you have. My 1588 only takes a minute or so to come back up. If I have the machine completely opened up it will take maybe 5 minutes or less to recover completely. If you have a still air unit it will take a lot longer as there is nothing to help move the air around.

I am wondering if the problem isn't taking the lid off and on, if this isn't somehow causing the gauge to change. Could it be that sensitive??

What are you using? I use a still air little giant and I have the same problem sometimes. I also have it turned all the way up and so I can't make it any warmer if the temp does drop. I just have to wait for it to get back up on it's own... What are you hatching? I have noticed the standard breeds fair better if there is a temp flux. Even with the temp issues I had I hatched out 21 of 24 Leghorn eggs last month. I think you should do what I do and just not candle your eggs anymore. Do not open the bator at all unless you have to to add water. If there is a whole at the top for venting I would even try watering through that with a tube... If your worried about exploding eggs, don't, you can smell the bad egg before it explodes so just take sniff once a week. Hope this helps, Good Luck...
