When you eat out do you leave a tip for bad service?

It was added to the bill, they refused to pay it. They paid for the food part but not the tip.
I cannot believe they were arrested either.
My father went to France and over there they did not accept tips, the waitstaff is paid a regular wage by the restaurants.
Over here the waitresses make around $2.00 or so an hour(it could have gone up a little since I waitressed) depending on the minimum wage for waitstaff, minimum wage is different for waitstaff than it is in the rest of the working world, that is why waiters depend on those tips.

For as long as I can remember (and that's a long time) the standard tip for restaurant service was 15%. Have you ever noticed that you receive unusually poor service the second time you patronize a particular restaurant?

Ten percent is a tithe, what you're supposed to give at church.

My company will re-imburse an employee for up to 20% for a tip they have given.

I've not given a tip before for bad service, but perhaps only once or twice.

We have one restaurant here in town, and its such a small town we know all the people that work there, 9 times out of 10 the wait staff are kids we see around town and things like that. We've never had bad service there because there is always something to talk about and we end up hogging the wait staff at our table.

TIPS = To Insure Proper Services. If I get bad service after complaining, there is no one person on this earth that could MAKE me leave a tip. If it is the kitchen's fault (over cooked, underdone, mushy veggies, etc.) I leave a tip.

Standard TIPS have always been 15% since the beginning of service establishments.

If it's bad service, we leave a dollar and a note. Great service gets 20-25%, so so gets just 15-20. Only once did we get terirble service, left a dollar, and they didn't actually charge it to our bill.

LOL OK... well, as long as I can remember, the tip option when paying by a debit card always showed you could give your own amount, or 10%. Same with on the bottom of the cheque. It's obviously different over here.

You're right, I'm sorry, I didn't notice your location. The important thing is to know what is customary in whatever part of the world you're dining in, and tip/don't tip accordingly. During college I waitressed in a restaurant next to an international airport. We did not appreciate giving excellent service to certain customers who would leave a Canadian quarter or two as a tip for a full dinner.

In my area I know that at a couple of restauarants if you reserve a table for a party of 6 or over and they add the tip to the bill its 18%.
I would never think of leaving 15% anyway, standard tipping is 20% and that is what I give for regular service and if its excellent then they get more.
If you think about it if you spend $100.00 in a restaurant then the waitstaff is doing more than dropping a burger in front of you and disappearing so is $10.00 or 10% a fair tip? 15% is $15.00
I get very embarrassed if I am out to eat with others and they leave a lousy tip.
Last time I went out with people this couple insisted on picking up the tab but they left an embarrassing tip and the waitress was great.
Since they were paying the tab we offered to take care of the tip but they refused since they were taking us out to dinner for some help we gave their son.
The problem was, their steaks were ordered medium and they came out medium rare, it was not the fault of the waitress but she apologized and returned them to the kitchen to be cooked more and then sent the manager over to check in with us.
He went ahead and comped both meals off of the bill even though the steaks were returned perfectly cooked, just good customer service.
Well this couple decided they only had to tip the waitress for the food that was on the bill even though she still waited on everyone at the table and brought all of the food that was eaten to the table, as well as filling drinks and all that.
I pointed that out to them but they were adamant about only tipping on the balance of the bill I did not know them well enough to argue so I excused myself to go to the bathroom and I looked for the waitress and gave her $20.00 and apologized.
Its good to remember that if you get meals comped and it was not the fault of the waitress she should still be tipped for the food that was brought out to the table.

The article said this.

Police charged them with theft since the gratuity was part of the actual bill. However, it is doubtful that the charges will hold up in front of a judge. The couple is scheduled to appear in court next month.

So, tax payer money will be used to prosecute a couple whose charges will probably be dropped. The owner of this restaurant is an idiot.

I'm a Chef and have worked in several restaurants. You did good.

Another thing I forgot to say is if the food was lousy (and not just because i'm picky...) I'll ask the waitress if they have to share tips. If she says no then I tip for the good service. If they do share tips I call the manager and explain that she gets this tip and NOT to share with the kitchen because the food was wrong etc.... and that's not (her/his) fault. blame the chef. (If he was a real chef there would NEVER be an issue with the food....but I digress...)
