I have two Sultans and four RIR's I think somewhere between 12 and 14 weeks old.....nothing yet! Getting more anxious hearing about your early layers!!!!

I have rir's , austalorps and barred rocks

( 29 ) of them that are 18 - 19 weeks old . NO EGGS YET ..

They are all showing signs tho , squatting , red combs , red wattles and EVEN their FACE is RED .

IS RED FACED another sign ?

I also have 8 bantams ( I have no idea the age tho )

NO EGGS from any of those 37

BUT I do have 3 rir's that are laying . Also have 3 others that ae being stubborn THO ...

DH nicknamed the stubborn 3 THE THREE STOOGES .

TOLD HIM THAT WAS A SILLY NAME , THESE ARE ALL FEMALES . LOL

Does any one feed their hens laying mash? My sis-n-law told me that she will feed her hens laying mash to get them started? She will also feed her other older hens some mash when they slow down on laying!! She "Angie" told me within a week of feeding her hens the laying mash, they start laying everyday! I haven't tried it. But I am about ready to. Has anyone else tried this method?

I feed laying mash during the winter. It takes a hen 30 min to eat her days ration of pellets, thats fine in the summer when they can be out, by the winter it gets boring. To eat her days ration of mash, it takes 3 hours. So it keep the hens busy.

I'm totally new to chickens, reading this thread because the rescued plymouth barred rock I got *might* be near laying age, *if* she's a hen.

That said, what IS laying mash? What is mash, anyway? What is the dry feed I get from the feed store (starter-grower at this point because it's my rescue, an immature banty hen, and two PBR pullets, maybe 6 wks old, all eating from the same food). I see people mention "mash" versus "pellets."

Can someone please translate for the newbie?

Thanks!
