When'd yours start laying?

I'm totally new to chickens, reading this thread because the rescued plymouth barred rock I got *might* be near laying age, *if* she's a hen.

That said, what IS laying mash? What is mash, anyway? What is the dry feed I get from the feed store (starter-grower at this point because it's my rescue, an immature banty hen, and two PBR pullets, maybe 6 wks old, all eating from the same food). I see people mention "mash" versus "pellets."

Can someone please translate for the newbie?

Thanks!

The layer mash i believe is ground up more then the regular pellets, kind of like the chick starter

I'm out with my silkie religiously... already checked her nesting box and run twice today (in the rain) and nada. She is 29 weeks now!

Ok I figured it up...mine (a white rock named Lulu) was 25 weeks old on Monday when she laid her first egg!
Woo hoo....now the other girls are under pressure!
I got 3 more hens (2BR and 1 cherry egger) the same age, but not laying yet.

3 RIR at 22 weeks and no eggs. I will have to check to see if the combs are red or if they're squatting yet. Thanks! First time, so I hope the guy didn't sell us some super chickens and we're just dumb. lol
