Where and When to Buy Chicks

Lots of good input.

I would consider another breed than Australorp... at least if you get the kind of heat I think of when you Texas and summer. Black is a bad color for the sun in my experience. Though I'm not sure how the Australorp itself handles heat. I will also say that you state your purpose is egg production and there are a lot of birds that put out more eggs, are lighter on the feed bill, and will do quite well in the heat. Maybe leghorn. Even though some may think they are plain, they are actually quite striking and funny birds. All that being said, I don't know what kind of cold you get there!

Sorry, I know that isn't what you asked. :smack

I'm not sure where you are in North Texas, but I was at the feed store today and they had several of the more common breeds of chicks, including Black Australops. Also, I have a batch of 9 week old chicks I ordered from Meyer hatchery. Due to the winter, they currently require an order of at least 15 chicks until March or April, then the minimum order goes down to 3 chicks. Good Luck!
