Where are the REDS now? Now and Then... (PICTURES INSIDE!)

My first batch of chicks made their way into the world on Feb 25th. It's been a month now, and BOY! Have they grown!

We hatched out 30 chicks! I sold off 10 of them (including one of my reds) about a week old to a kind old man my mother works with. Here's the group I referred to as the REDS THEN...

And here they are NOW...

I gotta say that they are by FAR my favorite in regards to coloring. I love the white/beige against the red. I think I have TWO roos in the batch, but as long as the rest are hens, I think I'll survive. What do ya'll think? In time I'll have to find homes for the roos or instroudce them to the soup pot...

I think he's a ROO... but he is sooo pretty!

A whole lot like the first one, but this one has more RED. It was meant to be a pic of both chicks, but one tried to run away. LOL

She's my favorite. She looks so dainty. You can see the other that has RIR coloring to her, in the background. Would not cooperate for pictures!

Any clues as to how many pullets/cockerels?

it looks like you MIGHT have one or two roos,it looks like only one, but they mostly look like pullets. in the chick pic, the one on the right front has pretty thick legs so i think you have one roo out of the bunch...at least

Ooh la la! Just what do we have here?

These are fabulously cool, and fairly similar to what I'm hatching out here as part of the "Alohachickens" project!

Where did these eggies come from? Where are you located? What size are the parents?

I would LOVE to trade eggs with you! If you like these chicks, you'll also love my chickens!!! I'm getting some red/white, but mine have more golden hues. Also getting some eggs from a BLUE MOTTLED hen right now, as well.

I'm going to cross my mottled speckly ones with bigger breeds like Buff Plymouth Rock and New Hampshire Red this coming fall, when the new Buff and NHR chicks are old enough. The babies will lose the mottling, but will increase size and egg production. Will bring the color back in on the next generation. The final goal is to get big, colorful mottled chickens in a variety of shades and patterns, that are good egg layers. (With roos being a good enough size to eat - classic dual-purpose backyard/homestead breed, but with bling!)

Earlier pages show adult parents, and my little start to the program. Now I'm up to 11 hens and four roos, but only five of the hens are of breeding age - the rest won't be mature until June, it looks like. We'll see a lot of progress this fall, especially since I set up a new coop, so I can do two breeding pens at the same time later on!

Right now, I have 10 newly hatched baby chicks from the existing stock, about 10 more eggs by those hens in the 'bator, and just put in 12 eggs from the new hens in the 'bator - collecting even more now - so between the newly hatched chicks and the ones still "baking" in the 'bator, will have another nice bumper crop of new chicks in the next month! Probably about 30-40 new chicks by the time the heat sets in? I live in Phoenix, so the heat stops their laying all summer.

Where are you located? I'd take that extra roo in a heartbeat, but I'm guessing you're not here in AZ, huh?

That's Ginger, and Patch. Patch is now with Larissa, and he looks very handsome! Ginger has also filled out and is even more stunning!

Below is the crazy little Banty-size hen that I got Ginger, Patch, and my new chicks from. Some of the new chicks I've hatched look just like her, but are smaller standard size, definately bigger than her. Patch and Ginger are her kids.

We can definately get some eggs together for a nice swap!

We actually just moved to Texas from Arizona. We lived in Graham County (about 1.5 hrs away from Tucson, stone throw away from Wilcox) for two years.

The chicks come from my own chickens. Some RIRs and a white rooster that is very much a mutt. These chicks are mutts 100% but they are mine, and they are beautiful and I love them.

The parents are standard size and not scrawny in the least bit. I take pride in my hens' fat fluffy butts.

The thing is that I also have two other roosters that love to sneak some time in with the ladies when my Alpha roo isn't looking. I hatched a good amount of barred chicks which tells me that he's getting it done. KWIM? I also gotta tell you that out of 30 chicks that hatched, only FIVE had red to them. How do y'all like those chances?

I checked out your website and love the coloring you are trying to achieve! I'd be more than happy to help you out in any way I can. Please let me know what it is you have in mind and we can discuss the details. I look forward to possibly joining ya'll in this project.
