I see as of Jan. 1st 2011 you can have 3 chcikens I guess.

I'm not to sure but I think I have been able to have chickens already. I don't live in the city limits so does that mean I don't have to follow the new law?

I live just south of the Lancaster mall. The city limits post is on the south side of center street. So does this mean that I could have had chickens all the time? Even before this new law?

I wish there was some kind of a map with some lines drawn on it to show where I can have 30 chickens and if I'm in the spot where I can only have the 3?.

I thought that if you didn't live in the city limits you could have as many chickens as you would want to have. This may be right and it may be wrong. I guess the only way I'm going to find out is to call the city or maybe someone on here can tell me the correct answer.

If anyone really knows PLEASE let me know and if you don't really know then maybe you could steer me to the correct city office to call and ask that would really know the answer.

Thanks guys.

You didn't say what city you were in.
I'm guessing it's Salem Oregon because of lancaster mall
and I heard Salem was voting about backyard chickens.
I don't know the answer to your question but others might
if they knew where you were.
Good luck, chickens are a lot of fun!

I live in Salem Oregon (Marion County) but I don't live in the city limits tho. If you know where center street is I live south of center street and center street is the deviding line for the city limits. Maybe I can show you this way.

Here is the Lancaster Mall [X]

Here is center street==============

Here is the city limits post [X]

Way down here is where I live. As you can see I don't live in the city limits. Did that help you guys at all? I hope so. It would be nice if it was to say this straight forward. If you don't live in the city limits you DON'T need that permit and you can have as many chickens as you would like.

I'm sure that it isn't going to be that easy tho. I'll bet ya it will say something like this.If you live out of the city limits you don't need the permit unless your mother lives next to a white cat that lives in a black house but only on siundays or Mondays.

I'm sure the city will screw it up like that somehow..lol. Any way I hope that helps in some way so someone in here might know.

Thanks for the reply guys.

Seeing where the city limit sign is posted on a street does not really tell you that you are or are not in city limits, especially if you live fairly close to the posting.

You need to look at a zoning map for the city and see if you fall within the corporate limits or not. If not, are you in the corporat limits for ANY city or town? If so, then its rules apply, if not, the county rules apply. You also need to check for deed restrictions, permitted uses in your zone and general code/ordinances.
