Over 25 years ago when I was a kid we moved to a hobby farm (15 acres). My dad grew up on a farm. We had hog troughs (the round feeding pans that they now make in rubber) and they had a wire Teepee cover. The birds could stick their heads through but not get in there and make a mess. Since it came to a point they couldn't roost on it. Has anyone found them anywhere. I wish I had a picture. Back then I grumbled more than I appreciated the backyard farm life. I would love to find a couple. We used them for the oyster shell and grit.

I just found something on a foreign feeder website that looks similar to what I was looking for. I will just keep searching. I did find a picture of a hay feeder and it reminded me that this is kind of like the hay rings people use in pastures but instead of a open top the metal wire come to a peak and it fits over the pan.

From your description this is what popped into my head:

Chain-Feed.jpg

It's shown on a chain run auto feeder that most commercial poultry growers use. The grill fits your description, but I'm not sure that the actual feeder does. But with just a regular trough that size that grilling would still work.

I found it here . It's about halfway down the page.

Can't you just turn some store bought , round , tomatoe cages upside down , wire the stakes together tepee style , and add some more wire to fill in between the stakes ?
ETA: we always called what your using a " feed pan " versus the long narrow " feed trough " also used for chickens or pigs .

This is from a booklet thats probably 80 years old or so. I wouldn't have any idea where to find one today.
I use a ring of 2" X4" welded wire in my low roofed tractors. In an open coop it wouldn't address the roosting on top problem.

We called them a hog troughs but yes thank you for finally finding them.
I was beginning to think my memory was wrong. I can't believe they sell the pans and nobody has manufactured the wire cage/cover. The tomatoe cage might be the best alternative.
