Where do I get my chicks?!

Okay, so we are new to the chicken world, and looking to start our backyard flock this coming July/August. I do not think the local TSC and feed stores have chicks available then.... I am only looking for about 4 chicks to start out... Do yall suggest any hatcheries? Should we just wait until the following spring for our local stores to start carrying chicks again?

CL usually has chicks. Only buying a handful online is fraught with problems.

Look on Craigslist. However, if you find there aren't any chicks around, you might just buy 15 or 25 chicks to be shipped, and then sell the rest on Craigslist yourself.

That's a good idea, are chicks usually in high demand through CL? I can't end up with 25 chicks if they aren't sold!

Purely Poultry has a small batch order (I just got 5 and they were perfect!!) other places do small batch or "city dwellers" orders as well doing a quick google search can help you locate them.

They were $12.20 for up to 9, then it drops to 7.34 I think. You will pay more for a small order but we just didn't have the room for a bigger order and I could not see buying animals that we would then need to sell or give away with a larger order.

Has anyone shipped chicks during the summer months? Is it very risky?
