I have a coop that is 4(L) x 3ish(W) x 3ish(H) with a solid hinged roof. I want to put a light in there come winter, but I have a few concerns:

1. Is it a fire hazard to put a heat lamp in such a small, enclosed space?

2. Where do I put it? Any good ideas as to how I can secure it in the coop?

Thanks!!

I see you are in Seattle, do you really need a heat lamp there in the winter? if you feel you do you could use the smaller wattage bulbs that walmart's sells. They are I think 85 watt or so for reptiles.

Most people hang them from the ceiling on wire or chain.

Hope that helps.

However you hang the light, give them room to get away from it if they want to. Also, I read another thread a while ago about using reptile heat rocks in little coops. Seems like they would need a place to move away from that too.

If you use any electric heat at all, you won't be using a heatlamp, just a regular lightbulb (like 40w, possibly 60). That will put out PLENTY heat for your size coop. That's not too much of a fire hazard. Certainly does not compare to risk of actual heat lamp.

Because it is quite important not to have chickens burn their combs on it, or fly/flap against it and break it, I would really suggest getting the kind of protective cage for it that you'd use in barns or garages.

I'm not sure where the best location would be, as I've never done that nor contemplated it. Honestly I rather doubt you need a lamp unless you have an unusually cold-susceptible breed. Although I do think it's not a bad idea to have the option available for just in case.

Good luck, have fun,

Pat
