Where do I put them.....

Hi, just thought I would let you know that when we got our chicks... (totally unprepared LOL) We had approx 30 chicks also... I went out and bought a storage tub at wally world for about $12.00. It worked out great because after cleaning and bleaching it, our children use it for their "treasures". Here are a couple of pictures... and you can get a good laugh by the picture too since my trixie is in it. At night and when they got older we put chicken wire over top. They stayed in it for about 3 to 4 weeks. finally put them out in the coop since the weather was nice. Good luck!

I use those plastic tubs too. I have hardware cloth pens outside for the young chicks, especially those that for whatever reason, don't have a mother. I put one of the tubs inside each pen for shelter from a light rain (I turn it on it's side), then at night, I gather up those that need to go inside and put them into the tub and carry them into the bathroom. They sleep in the tub, then I use it to take them outside again in the morning. Also use one as a "hospital" for injured or really tiny chicks.
Every couple of days, I hose them all out. I like to add a little soap and bleach, then wash the feeders and waterers in one while I'm doing the rest.
It's good for quite a few chicks, depending on the size of the chick. Of course, you can fit more in there if it's just used for sleeping. When the chicks start to fly, I usually have to put the lid over it loosely just while transporting them to and from their pen, otherwise, they get out and start running all over the yard.
The only problem I have found is that if I put hay in the bottom, the waterer doesn't sit level and sometimes leaks badly. Does anyone know about a waterer that could hang from the side? Maybe something self-leveling? I was thinking to put a bar across the top and hang a waterer?

Babies got here today, had one DOA. They are safely esconced on the patio in their swimming pool with their chicken netting around it. They are snug with their pine shavings and have learned to peck in their feed and drink.....they are too cute! I got 5 lavender guineas too and they are just adorable. So far, so good! The grandson loves them!
I'll post some pics when I get a chance.

On a sadder note, I found my RIR roo Rock a Doodle dead today.

But I also found a guinea sitting on a nest with 11 eggs!

Cakkle... what I did to resolve the water problem what I took a baking rack (the kind you cool cakes on) and put a couple of sticks under it to lift it up a little bit. It worked awesom... the water stayed clean (well as much as it could) and never got tipped over.

oopss sent that to soon... ourhouse... sorry to hear about your losses. But at least you 11 new eggs... I know its not the same... expecially when you get attached. Good luck with the new babies.
