WHERE do people find chicks for Easter? Besides TSC & FEED STORES?

Several years ago, one of my (then) high school teachers bought his daughters two chicks. After a week, they weren't so cute and fluffy, were starting to poop a lot, and his girls didn't want anything to do with them anymore. So he hunted me down in the halls, because of my reputation for being the crazy chicken lady, and I acquired both of them. I was happy because I got two new chicks, but I kinda lost some respect for him for not thinking the whole thing through.

Well better that they have to wait, not a big deal, than have these little babies sold to people that don't have good intentions....Im sure most people can put off getting a couple chicks till next week, Im getting more silkie chicks tomo, I didn't mind not having them for Easter

If I know that they already have chickens or have bought some earlier in the season and we have different ones in that they didnt get I will sell just a few, but you can usually tell the ones that dont or have no idea what they are doing and getting a couple on a whim.

My mom has wanted to do this for a few years now, get all the grandkids a chick for Easter. It would be okay in our/her situation though because she could care for them and make sure they have what they need. But I have discouraged it because I don't think it should be ONLY HER responsibility, it should also be the kids. Now that we have ours and may in the future have chicks (if we keep a roo) then I will let her have a few chicks, not one for each child and they have to help take care of them. Same with bunnies.

The dog pound where we got our newest dog has bunnies and chickens. That was the first thing the guy asked us, would you like a bunny, chicken or your everyday pet (dog/cat). I asked if they really had bunnies and chickens and he said yes. People get them and then can't or don't want to keep them. Very sad.

My mother and I were talking about chicks for easter and the subject of the 6 min. came up. She said it was just a sign of the way times change. When she was little my grandpaw would buy all the kids chicks from the feed store. The feed store would use some kind of food coloring to color them pink, blue, or whatever, and that would be their easter present. He would put them in the wood box by the stove until they were big enough to move into the coop with the older chickens. Even though they were easter presents they were relied on to provide food on the farm, and not considered a "toy" but rather something practical.

If only it were like that now days. Kids now think they can get a puppy or kitten and say they will care for it, but in the end it is usaully the parents that do the caring or the animal is put down or goes to live in the doggie jail until someone else wants it. I have never had this problem with my kids but my grandkids are different. They want and want and want, but they don't want to take the resposibility. I know dogs and cats can't really give anything in return, except for lots of love and affection toward it owner, but kids now days don't even seem to appreciate that. They just want what the other kids have, who cares if it is something that needs care, they just want it 'because'.

I really understand the minimum chick purchase, but I wonder if they make exceptions. Only a few lots in my city are allowed chickens, and those that are have a max of 4 hens.

I know my local feed store has a minimum chick purchase of 5. I only wanted four. The girl I talked to said I had to get manager approval to buy less than 5, but the manager wasn't available to give approval for a half hour. I sat there and waited with my kids who got increasingly fidgety. I finally just bought five with the idea that I'd give the 5th one to my friend. I ended up getting attached and keeping them all though. Oops.

when I was out shopping around yesterday I was telling the girl at our local feed store that my town only allows 4 chickens, and she was like the minimum is 6 state law...she was like doesn't your town know that! lol...they probably do...but it's still a max of 4...but really I don't think they would notice if I have 6....but I really did only want 4...so i will have to look for someone selling some or try and buddy up with someone at the feed store!
