Where do they go?

Hey, don't be sorry! This is why people join BYC. You ask questions and you learn

By all means get your kids some ducks! Just bring them to a farm, not a local pond

If you cannot keep them then don't get them. You have a responsibility to the animals you take in and it is not a good lesson that animals are disposable. Go visit a petting zoo instead. Let the kids pet ducklings at a feed store. It would be a lot less work. Ducklings are cute but they also stink, are extremely messy, and grow very fast. Believe me you will start wanting to put them outside because of the smell and mess. Unless I was going to keep them I would not put myself through that.

Posts like this just infuriate me. Animals are not disposable. They are not 'science experiments'. You are doing nothing but teaching your kids that poultry are not valuable, and that they can just be discarded when you are bored of them.

I would like to believe in the good of people, and assume that the original poster was looking for advice BEFORE getting the ducklings, but the sad reality is that they probably already have them. And that they will just be dumped into a pond whenever she/he/family is tired of them, where they will either starve to death or die from predators. If they are lucky they might survive...but then you have to deal with non-native species, which could harm the native waterfowl.

I know this sounds harsh, but I truly hope that if the poster does dump them somewhere, that somebody sees them and reports them. I know I would.

Ok, as you can see by just reading the thread, the person that started it obviously has his/her mind made up that he/she is going to get ducks. No matter how many posts there are about how it is a bad idea to get ducks just to get rid of them later, this person's next post is about releasing them and/or rehoming the ducks. As far as I can tell, this person has decided to ignore all of the posts about not getting the ducks, and is just asking more questions about ways to get rid of them. Not to mention, this person has also started a number of other threads relating to rehoming these ducks. SO.....I have come to the conclusion that this person is probably not even reading this thread, and if he/she is, then they are just ignoring half of the posts.

Now steny03, I do understand that animals are not disposable and that you do have a reason to be infuriated. But, I tried to make my last post as positive as possible because there is no point in being negative and just have the person who started the thread ignore your post. Im not sure if your post was directed to me at all, but im sure that you would agree with me that rehoming the ducks into a new home is about 1000x better than having them released (which is basically a death sentence). But not getting the ducks in the first place is a lot better than rehoming them.

Ducksandchicks - if you are even reading this thread, I also suggest that you DO NOT get ducks if your are just planning on getting rid of them in the long run. But you most likely will just get the ducks anyway, or you already have them. SO as a second suggestion, find them a good home. And don't release them.

In conclusion, I am signing off of this thread because there is no use arguing with anyone over this.
I will probably talk to you guys again in some other thread

Nope, my comments were directed only at the original poster, no offence meant towards you at all. I've seen their other threads, so chose not to write a 'nice' post, in which it would sound like I was condoning their actions. Rehoming is the best solution, but I doubt the original poster will do that.

You guys are so harsh, people said to not get the ducks, but if do look for homes before, that's what I did and you criticized me for doing it. Some people are nice here and thank you, but some are just harsh.

steny03 actually I haven't gotten them yet. No need to be so negative. I was trying ideas, because I didn't know, and now I just feel horrible which how some of you people want me to feel. Congrats you guys just lost a member,

People are harsh, myself included, because there are way too many people who buy chicks/ducklings and only keep them while they are cute. Then they are released out into the wild or into city parks once they are bored with them or find out that they are too much work.

If you have a farm or buyer lined up, then go ahead. But there really are so many other better scientific experiments that you could do with your children that does not discard creatures after you are finished with them. I feel the same way about elementary schools who use baby chicks as scientific experiments in their classrooms.

Actually, I ordered the ducklings, and I found a perfect person to take care of them. My children like animals, so I tried to include that into the experiments. They have already raised butterfly's and frogs at school. One of my children did a little research and found a nice farm. And actually you don't need to say my other threads infuriate you, because I was just trying to learn. You also jumped to conclusions that I was going to dump them, which you are wrong on also.

OK im rejoining the thread.
Ducksandchicks - Yes, I was harsh and I sincerely apologize. You worried me in the beginning of the thread when you said you were going to release them. Now that I look back on my most recent post, I do regret some of the things I have said. I was trying to give some criticism and I went overboard.
I sincerely wish you very good luck with your new ducklings and their future home.
