Where do you buy feed at?

Last year we used flockraiser purchased from our local feed store. It made a nice bird but it was still flockraiser when it came out the back end...just more runny.

This year I bought a grinder and mixed the Fertrell broiler ration (http://www.fertrell.com/poultryration.htm). Here are the highlights:

-It's about 2 cents per pound cheaper without a lot of shopping around.
-The chickens found it to be more filling...they ate less of it
-The manure was much more firm and looked to be better digested. Looked different than when it went in.
-I can spell all of the ingredients.

Maybe buying a grinder isn't for everyone. I think it's worth your time to find someone who can help you grind feed. Maybe you and a neighbor or friend could split up the minimum batch required. We use metal trash cans for feed bins.

Hubby's work is near Huron which is what generally gives me a good excuse to shop at the Runnings there even if it is almost a 90 mile one-way drive! I don't know what Watertown's store is like....I know the one closer to me in Parkston is ridiculously TINY....but the one in Huron is gigantic, almost double the size of a typical TSC. It's like the best of TSC and Cabela's in one store, tons of hunting & fishing stuff...and their "chick days" is like nobody else's around here. Last year they had turkeys, pheasants & guineas along with 5 or 6 different chicken breeds & 2 or 3 duck breeds to choose from. In a way I'm GLAD they're so far away otherwise I'd be in every day seeing what their newest poultry shipment brought in

The Huron store sounds similar to Watertown--it's in an old Walmart building, and it's completely full--puts TSC to shame

. And they have a nice variety of chicks too--I've seen 3 types of ducks, pearl guineas, and lots of chickens--we got all our chicks from their this year. And they are even ordering in the 8 more hens that we want! They have been really nice to work with, and really informative. A couple days after I got my meaties, 2 died--and I went to Runnings, looking for something to protect the rest, and they gave me new new CX--no charge, and a packet of vitamins! So I'm very happy with Runnings this year!

I buy feed at a farm that mills their own crops. All GMO free, non-certified organic. I just paid $117.50 for 500 lbs. About 1/2 the price of certified organic feed here in VT.

The local feed mill won't do a custom mix unless you order 4500 lbs. at one time. Their broiler finisher is about 11 for 50lbs, but it is medicated.
