I buy poultry mix as I need it, and fill the feeder barrels straight away.
Egg shells for extra calcium sit in a tray or bowl to dry off, then I keep them in a calico bag and crush them up before scattering them on a spot in the garden. They eat it when they need it.
I'm changing from straw to wood chips for bedding. I shred dead tree branches into wood chips and keep them in 60 litre plastic bins inside an upturned thousand-litre 'pod' tank that has its top side cut off. I need to fit a tarpaulin over it to keep any rain out.
Mucked-out bedding goes straight into a 'compost corner' I made with old chipboard pallets and star pickets along the corrugated iron fence. When the compost is ready I can just lift up a pallet and let the chickens spread it across the garden!
Spare egg cartons sit on an old couch in the tool shed, near where the chooks sleep.
