Where do you keep your feed if you don't have a shed?

Out here raccoons have proven they can get into any type of trash can so we have an old, non working, chest style freezer in the barn and keep all our feed in that.

I leave the shavings in the bags and set them wherever I find space.

I keep mine in sealed plastic bins in the garage.

I keep mine in plastic garbage cans that have lids that lock on them out behind my house close to my animals.

We keep ours in a sealed dog food container in the garage ! we have way to many wild quail and hawks and lose coyotes !

I live out in the country. Lots of farms and wandering critters. Ours is in a plastic trashcan with handles that lock the lids shut. No animals have tried to chew threw or open them. (Unless you count my 3 yr old son who knows how to get in them!

)

I kept my feed in rubbermaid containers for years until I raised an orphaned squirrel who chewed through them with with the greatest of ease.. Now I broke down and bought metal cans with tight lids - expensive but eliminating the aggravation is worth it..

I pour the feed directly into the can - just easier

I have the large medal garbage cans . I leave them in the run between the large fowl and bantam pens.It is easier to scoop out than the bags and also protects it from weather and critters.

I just found a non-working freezer for free on craigslist so it will be sitting in a corner near the coop.
I also use metal trash cans for the goat feed, etc. I can usually find them for $3-5 at estate sales, then just clean 'em out good and sanitize.

We tried the shed...mice got into it. Then we tried the garage....mice got into it. Then we gave it...ALL dog food, cat food, chick starter and lay pellets are in the dining room. THe house is the only place we can guarantee we won't get mice...well, that and the car.

ETA...we tried a air-tight plastic container. It was tight all right! The mice had to eat through the plastic lid to get to the feed...and they did. It was in the hard plastic five gallon plastic containers too...not flimsy plastic! We now have Buckeye chicks...supposedly they are good mousers. ~crossing fingers~

Wow, thanks for all the good info! I actually got chickens that are already 4 months old so they are on lay mash. There run is not big enough in my opinion to put a trashcan with their food so I think I'll try to get a metal trashcan. For now it's in the house. I haven't seen any rats, but I know we have a mice problem around summer so I want to keep it away from them.
