Where do you keep your show Roosters?

I just have the 2 cocks right now. I just started getting into breeding more this last year so I am still building up my flock and facilities

I like to keep my hens on the ground at all times since they seem to easily get fat. When I am not using the cockerels and cocks they go into 3×4 pens(I have large fowl Cochins) until I need them again. The bedding for both is shavings, I clean the male pens daily

If your birds easily get fat, that is a dietary issue. You may want to change what you feed. How much fat do you pinch between your fingers?

If you’re feeding correctly it doesn’t matter how small the pen is, in reality.

Your birds will do enough pacing and walking in even the smallest pens to keep muscle up and fat down.

My extra roosters are housed together until they’re about four months old, then we begin culling and selling.

Otherwise they’re paired up, in 2x4 pens, which either have wire bottoms or solid bottoms with shavings. The wire bottom birds have wood “resting” areas to prevent bumblefoot. I use old tidy cats jugs from the barn cats for nesting boxes and old milk jugs to make feeders and drinkers.

They’re not fancy but my birds don’t care what it looks like if they can eat, drink, and lay their eggs accordingly.

Even at four months I don’t like culling because they’re still growing and you could miss a good bird by selling too early.

I’m in Texas so shade is my biggest priority. We have a large shed and multiple outdoor cages. I spend a good portion of my day cleaning birds and cages, and about once a week I wash feeders and drinkers.

The flies are terrible here and I’m really digging that screen idea.

Good luck on your future adventure!

Where do you keep your show Roosters?
Back in the day when we did birds for "SHOW", we had separate quarters for each show quality bird. It was a lot of work.

No dirt or dirty conditions. We had hutches with a deep litter bed.
Only the best of the best got to be pampered in these hutches.
OMG, I am remembering the grooming and pain staking efforts we took to keep them perfect looking.
That went on for about 3 yrs. That was enough. I admire the ribbons and awards more than the hard work these days.
