I currently have 5 Silkie's that are 6 month's old. They currently have free range of a 2 room coop with ton's of nest boxes and the upper level on one side has nice roomy ledge's on the top boxes.But...They alll just group in a corner on the floor every night.I plan on moving them shortly to a converted old smokehouse where I used to keep the silkie's I had before with just a couple of ground level nest boxes. They are free range day right now but the roo's are getting busy but no egg's yet.I have never had any roosting silkie's minus a couple that may have got in boxes about a foot off the floor.

Ten Silkies in a pile here.

I watch them fairly close. The area of the cage where they actually sleep,
they seem to advoid it during the day. Woodchip bedding, they've made a
groved-down bed in it....about 1/4 chicken deep.

Really hard to say, but I think the chickens each seem to prefer a certain
place in the pile.

For those chicken-keepers that have chickens that actually roost on a stick...
Do your chickens seem to have a certain order?

My silkies are inther coop for the first time tonight and so far they are doing the whole silkie pile thing.....Out of our 9 chicks they tend to keep to themselves...although they will cuddle with the other chicks to stay warm.

ditto for the pile technique! andI have picked them up, placed them in a lovely nest box that is on the floor and they laugh at me with their little beaks in the air! We'll see who's laughing the first time one the the "Big girls" lets loose a poop in the night and it lands on them!

I hope it doesn't kill them !

I do have to be careful going into their tractor if it's dark though because the Pile moves from night to night. Never know where they are going to be and being all blue, black, and splash they are hard to see!

A.T. Hagan :

I have one old Silkie rooster that roosts with the other birds. The other five Silkies sleep in the Silkie Pile on the ground every night.

Sillkie pile, I like that. That is where mine are, with a polish among them.

At least now I know that my silkies aren't being weird by being on the ground. I am just thinking forward to next winter when the coop ground just gets a little damp. I guess I can keep lots of wood chips on it. They free range during the day so the coop/run is only for sleeping and eating. I might try putting an old crate in there upside down and see if they will get on it. The ground just seems so, I don't know, dirty?? And they have such pretty white feathers.

I guess I need to make sure that I always own more than one silkie. It would be a lonely pile of one.
