Sorry, the news is on behind be scaring the bejeebers outta me. My point is making money by cheating (which is what I think of cramming 'stupid' chickens together, among many other factory farm type practices, in the greater business world, it's accounting shenanigans) isn't good financial sense. Well grown chickens and eggs (and sound financial practices) benefit all.

I'm not sure if I understand. Are you for the measure or against it? I for one am for it.

And chickens aren't naturally vegetarians. Again, that's just a marketing appeal to a demographic that's so removed from reality that they think it's somehow wrong for meat-eaters to eat meat.

I know, but to me it's still better to buy eggs from hens that don't have to live their whole lives in wire cages not able to move. Believe me, I would much rather have my own hens or buy from a neighbor, but since that isn't an option for me right now, I believe the cage free eggs are the best thing available at the supermarket. As far as the "vegetarian fed" thing goes, this just tells me that they aren't feeding recycled chicken parts back to the layers. I know chickens are omnivorous, but in my opinion, that's just disgusting.

Sorry, I was off on a rant. I'm really unhappy with what's going on in the market and in Washington. But what's a girl to do about it?

I am for it, my only caveat would be that it could be taken too far, as someone upthread mentioned, even eliminating the ability to cage birds for show (ridiculous reach, perhaps, but stranger things have happened).

The greater good would be for the agrifood corporation business types to smarten up and stop trying to cheat their way to profits, unfortunately, we all know how that will go!

o say that the cost of eggs will skyrocket to 20 some odd dollars per dozen, if this proposition is passed is absurd. Smaller, more local farms and producers WILL pop up. People will find other ways to get eggs.. or produce or what ever they need. Will it be "painful"? Probably. But maybe what is needed is the weeding out of the weak in this country.

The Egg producers in California produce between 5 and 6 BILLION eggs per year. It should be an easy task for small producers to come up with the number of eggs. Just to put it in perspective it would take 50,000 producers with 500 hens to meet that demand.

Does anyone know what if any is the limit on hens per cage in CA currently?

Back near Easter on talk radio a host mentioned that you used to be able to find eggs on sale this time of year for $.99, but currently the cheapest was $2.99 in WA. It was said the reason for the higher price was feed & fuel costs plus the number of hens allowed per cage had been reduced. The only hit on google about hens per cage mentions either the CA initiative or the EU law.

The egg prices have come down now so it must have been just the fuel prices driving the increase. Last Spring all eggs at my local store whether Naturally Nested AA or generic grade A were all $2.99/12.

I havent exactly followed this thread and have skipped the paged between the first and the last, but he has done exactly what he set out to do.... create discussion of the topic.

I see it as a political tool used to get the non-chicken owning public to vote against the proposition. He is playing into their ignorance to sway a vote.
