Alabama's doing pretty well when compared to others--4+% unemployment, about 1+% foreclosure rate. But that budget deficit, while low compared to other states, really does worry me at $458 million. That's scary!

I thought Nebraska was in the middle . . . of the US.

Imagine Wyoming with 500,000 people (ranked 50th) getting just a tiny fraction of California's 37,000,000 people (ranked 1st). I mean, it isn't all that far away from a Western's point of view.

If we don't believe that we are all in this together - we are just kidding ourselves. But when it comes to going elsewhere to better provide for our families, I think it is childish to pout about it. Imagine where we'd all be if our ancestors sat it out on the sidelines. (This from a guy who has been in just about the same place thru 40 years now.

Because we are in the middle of nowhere land we tend to be a little more insulated to the rapid changes of the rest of the nation. We do have our problems though. If things get too bad we'll just cecede from the nation.

Neighboring Oregon is doing a little worse than Washington State.

I do know that unemployment in my county is currently 11.9%

I consider myself as living in the middle of nowhere, and I live in Northern NJ! Actually, it doesn't matter whether I'm in south jersey at school, or at home...I'm still in the middle of no where. It's hard to believe, but NJ is mostly made up of "nowhere land", with a few large cities in between.

I would be more proud saying I came from the middle of nowhere (and I am...just not proud of being from NJ), then saying I was from the city!​

I'm in CA trying to get to OR or WA. CA's problems make me, a 7th generation CA want to leave because I know I will never be able to afford a house on some land here, or if I did I would be taxed to let other people who don't work continue to use cell phones (yes I've had homeless ppl come into the cellular store when I was there to get their phone fixed. If I can't afford one and I work full time, who is paying for theirs??)
