Where is the best place to buy chicks?

Your local feedstores, online hatcheries, local breeders, anywhere really. It all depends on what breeds you want, if you want truly purebred chickens, if you want quality in your chickens, what quantity you want, etc.

Also, wouldn't this topic be better in the chicks section, not the eggs section? Just wondering. Also -

Well, that can depend on what you want. If you are just after some good laying hens and quality breeding really isn't an issue, then you might still find some at a feed store or Tractor Supply. Many people (like me) have chicks listed for sale on Craigslist. Don't be afraid to ask the seller questions about the breed, sex, age, and so forth.

Many common breeds are still available from hatcheries also. I've had good experiences with Meyer Hatchery, Cackle, and Ideal.

Welcome to the wonderful world of chickens.

Local breeders! At first I planned to order from mypetchicken.com, but then I discovered that the person we got our doves from also was raising chickens. We are so happy that we got our chickens this way. Our chicks were not stressed from shipping, and we were able to see the parents, see the husbandry conditions they were kept in, and judge the health and quality of the stock before we picked out our chicks (we also got to pick the ones we wanted ourselves, too).

I've since learned more about the chicken hatchery industry, and I'm really glad I didn't participate in that.
