Where not to buy a coop

Good! The Amish are the main owners of puppy mills in the midwest, believe it or not, and their horses are overworked and break down young.

They are NOT paragons of virtue by any stretch of the imagination!

There was recently a big bust around here of an Amish puppy mill. It was disgraceful-cages stacked 3 and 4 high and the poor dogs had never felt grass on their feet. So the new law, which I think is sorely lacking, is that they can only stack 2 high or some nonsense and they have to let them out for a certain amt of time a day. Maybe a few other restrictions but IMO not nearly enough.

I think they apply the same logic when advertising the number of chickens that their coops hold. Just stack them in there and this 6x4 coop will hold 18 chickens.

Thank you for the support. We have our chickens and they're staying in a screen porch 'til the coop gets here. If they'd said it would take this long, we would've looked elsewhere. Hopefully it will be here soon.

I don't want to bad mouth the Amish, last time I did, I got warned. However, I will say, that there are "Englishmen" who are craftsmen as well. Maybe you might want to look into keeping your money in your community instead of paying the Amish. I am sure there is a contractor, or a handyman who is looking for work to keep his family fed in these down economic times.

Whoa. It is not hardly fair to judge a whole group of people by the actions of some of that group. I have know Amish that I have been very close to and would trust to build anything for me...however I have also know Amish that I would not trust to take out my garbage. But isn't that pretty much true of every group of people.

My DH and I ordered a chicken coop from a local Amish family. It will be finished in 4 - 6 weeks. From looking at his other work, we will be happy with it. We visited them at their farm and their animals looks well cared for.

I would wonder if the advertised Amish was really operated/owned by Amish. I get the biggest kick out of the TV/newspaper ads picturing the smiling "Amish", when the true Amish never want their picture taken.
And yes, living amongst them, there are as many bad apples there as in any other culture but are greatly outnumbered by the good-- as in other cultures.

people are people, everywhere. I think it is a shame that the 'bad apples' get all the publicity, and the good ones just go about their business. Mostly. Hope it comes soon.
