Where roosters come to be loved.....not baked.

Ok...after we got the silkie anytime that he would try to mate with the hens Bruce would go tell him off...this went on for weeks...then one day I'm in the coop doing stuff and watching the chickens and Bruce hops up on his favorite hen, the BO (she's the only hen near his size although I have seen him mating with the smaller hens) anyway he's on his hen and just when he gets settled the silkie flies out of nowhere and ninja kicks Bruce right off his hen. Bruce was too stunned to even retaliate. Before then it was always Bruce walking or running over to the silkie and the silkie bowing out and wandering off.

The time Bruce was my hero...

I was in the coop face timing with one of my friends hanging out with the chickens, and I bent down to clear some hay out of the chicken feeder and the silkie rooster starts flying at me pecking and clawing at my hand...so I stand up surprised and with a pecked hand wondering what the H just happened and this silkie keeps coming a me all about my shins and ankles...so I'm squealing and hopping around so I called Bruce and he comes running back in the coop and jumped all over that silkie.
Bruce has saved me 3x since then. I guess save me isn't right because its a silkie we are talking about, but he has rushed to my aid 3x. The times after the first I knew what was happening though so I would just keep pushing the silkie bak away from me til Bruce could come get him...he hasn't tried to attack me in awhile, so perhaps the rooster system of reprimanding has worked. Bruce also aided my husband once when the silkie flogged him. My hubby is 6'5" so he didn't seem to notice the silkie was attacking him. He was walking to the car and the the silkie started flying at the backs of his legs, and my husband turns and tells the silkie you better not attack me, and I was like honey, he's attacking you now...but Bruce was already there to jump on the silkie...

Poor silkie he's totally shut out now though. He is all the way at the bottom of the pecking order now. In the coop he won't go near any of the other chickens because when he does one of the other 2 Roos jumps on him. He seems very lonely. When I throw scratch I will try to give him some but as soon as another chicken comes over to eat some of it he wanders off to a more secluded spot in the coop. So somebody has to go. So hard. One rooster is fit to eat, but is a good rooster, and one rooster is bad and (as far as I'm concerned) not fit to eat... Decisions decisions. I shouldn't have Bruce and the silkie together though. All I wanted the silkie for was cute little fuzz mixed babies, and that is never going to happen as long as Bruce is up there...
Bruce lets the other cockerel mate the smaller pullets that he hasn't so far tried to mate. He mates the mom, but she is a mature hen, although still bantam sized...but she's bigger than her chicks ( the pullets) that are 6 months old... Anyway Bruce allows the other guy to mate, but never the silkie... So....anyone have any ideas that don't involve building another coop...the one we have is 18x20 ft so we don't need a new coop, just compatible Roos.

Perhaps you can find a way to temporarily separate them so the silkie roo can breed some of your hens and when you feel confident enough you have fertile eggs take them for hatch and perhaps find someone with a flock either vaccinated for mareks or who has already been confirme to be carriers. This way you won't have to cull him and you get the floofy fuzzy babies. Bruce is an awesome name btw. Sounds like an amazing rooster

He is pretty awesome...I think maybe in between the meat birds being processed and the turkeys going outside I'll use the meat bird coop as the silkie love pad...because I just want some fuzz babies...I want big hens with crazy crests. And I can't ever have enough feathered feet and penguin waddling.

Lol I have never had an encounter with this wild looking breed but I died laughing when I read your description of them!!!

I prefer mutt chickens. The more mutley the better. I mean I wanna see 3 combs all rolled into one, and 12 different colors.. I don't want to be able to guess what the parents were... The weirder the better. Variety is the spice of life. And with my dull existence I need all the variety I can get.

I totally get that line of thinking. I just got two pure bred copper marans, and as beautiful as they are I can't wait to see what they look like mixed with my buff orps and my RIR mix.

Exactly. When picking out my birds I was more focused on what the breed might add to my mix more so than the breeds themselves... Lol.
I will have a lot of pure breeds for now... But as soon as they start laying I'll have crazy mutt heaven...actually I'm already there. I have 10 adult chickens, 3 I'm sure are pure... But I have 17 chicks 4 weeks old now 4 different breeds, and 12 chicks of 2 breeds coming in may.

I also have 18 or 19 eggs getting ready for lockdown on the 9th that are from all kinda of hens in with a black copper Marans and a blue copper Marans rooster. Some orpingtons, barnevelders, EE, Olive Egger, RIR, Barred Rocks, Speckled Sussex, Wyandottes, all kinds of hens. I have no idea what will hatch out of the eggs, but it's going to be awesome! I'm excited about all the feathered legs. And colors!

Oooooooo! You have to post pics when they hatch! I've got the blur copper marans and buff orps. It would be so cook to see the "potential" outcomes!

I want people to drive by my house and admire my super colorful flock of strange looking chickens. Aww man you got me started on my favorite subject... Mutt chickens.
I could never breed anything pure except maybe EEs. I get bored too easy. It's like oh, an egg hatched! What color is the chick? Yellow. Ooh another egg hatched! What color? Yellow... Oh a chick! Color? Yell-oh forget it... Boring!

Well if I can figure out which chicks are which then you'll have an idea. The only eggs I can identify are the EE and olive eggers. Which chick had which mom will be a mystery we must solve first. I know my hens eggs, but not the hens of the local guy I got the eggs from. I think I know which one is the barnevelders. It's super Marans dark...
