Basically baby chicks can be kept in any enclosure that is predator proof and draft proof and that can be kept at the correct temperature for their age.
When my chicks arrived in early April they started out in the motorcycle shed. It isn't insulated, but between their draft guard, the heat lamps and an oil-filled electric heater they were fine. Problem was within two weeks it was too hot for them in there during the daytime. We moved the brooder, the draft guard and the lights to the screened porch and they continued to do fine, even with lows at night in the 40s. We took their nighttime light away from them at five weeks (nighttime lows in the 50s) and all was well.
I can't imagine having baby chicks and all their dust in the house.
