Just for curiosity- you do realise that the hatcheries that sex the chicks, and sell you just the pullets, cull the male chicks. A few might leave as the free mystery chick, but anything not sold will be euthanized. Hopefully, they will be processed to be sold to individuals who keep meat eating pets (reptiles, birds of prey etc). Most of us are OK with this as we are not culling the males, but it is still happening.

Yes, I am very aware of the cruelty at hatcheries. It does really sicken me. As for the hatchery I order from, they DO NOT cull the males.

I hatched 30 chickens & I got 17 pullets & 13 cockerel. I put a sign up by my gate. Roosters for sale!!! I sold 6 today for five bucks each. I didn't ask any questions about what they were gonna do with them I was just glad to get rid of them. I now have 7 more to get rid of. Once I get rid of the other 7 I'm gonna find a roo that looks strong & has similar markings to my pullets & get him to run with the 17 pullets.

Would anyone in central Massachusetts be interested in a rugged handsome Plymouth Barred Rock PET six week old rooster? See him on my site. I'm not desperate enough to give him away to be culled. How long before he'll be trouble in my hen house? When will he be fertile and how long will my hens stay fertile after separation? None are producing eggs yet, they're only six weeks old. I read that female turkeys can continue producing fertile eggs 70 days after separation from the Tom turkeys.

Please let me know if you're interested. I think I'll check with Davis Farmland in Sterling, or maybe the local 4H club next week.

Point taken. I just got my first sexed chicks this year and unsuspectingly got a PBRock rooster. I'd been thinking I could keep him long enough to fertilize one batch of eggs and then try to find him a home. But as you point out there's bound to be 50% rooster chicks.

This is why I have a rule when hatching chicks getting any from a hatchery Have a plan for roosters and try and not get attached until you are for sure that a chick is a girl. I am sorry but any hatchery is going to cull extra roosters or sell them as meat birds. There is no demand for roosters just pullets. Most roosters are going to end up as dinner and that is not all bad as long as they had a good life and where treated humanly in death what is wrong with them feeding a family. I have 5 eggs under a broody any roosters will be dinner but I know that they will have a great life until they do become dinner. Some roosters might find a home with hens but what happens if that sweet rooster turns mean and starts attacking people he will become dinner more then likely. Good luck hope you can find homes for your roosters but you might have to come to the point of not asking what the person's plan is for the rooster.

Not trying to high jack your thread but I'm along way from you. I also have 7 RIR cockerels that I'm getting rid of for 5 bucks a bird just to re-coop my feed money invested. These birds father is a great roo & good provider for his 11 hens. The cockerels are 3 months old. I live in Navasota Texas if interest
