I'm in central CT (east of the river). I haven't found food grade DE anywhere either.

I hate the idea of paying shipping, but haven't heard about anything as effective as DE.

find your local brewpub or microbrewery.....some use DE filter boards but others use the DE powder for filtration of beer and they usually buy it by the pallet load. They should be willing to sell you a 50# bag.
You can also get a great beer while your there!

I'm in Boston and the only local thing I could find was the Red Lake Earth brand stuff at Erikson's Grain Mill in Acton, MA.

If you can't find anything else and don't want to order the Permaguard, that could be an option.
