I’ve been looking everywhere for african harlequin quail. I’ve raised them in the past but now they seem to have vanished. If someone could point me to a breeder, It would be greatly appreciated. I’ll take eggs or live birds.

You may get more responses if you go to the ‘Buy, Sell, Trade’ category and then to the ‘Other Poultry’ category. And include you country/state. Good luck :)

Garrie Landry in LA used to raise them. I don't know if he still does. I've been contemplating getting some, but from what I've heard, they have a lot of infertility issues. I'm just not ready to tackle them yet.

When I had them the first time I got a 30% hatch rate. It the second generation I only got about 8%. At the same time I had silver schofield quail, and was getting a 96% hatch rate. I keep the African Quail until they got too old to lay. This is my second attempt.

We really need new bloodlines in the US. I have a feeling that has a lot to do with the infertility problems. I have talked with a friend of mine about the possibility of importing some, but the time and expense isn't something I can take on right now.

Any idea how one goes about importing quail, and what kind of costs are associated with such a venture. I own an outdoor supply company so it would be a business expense for me. Except rain quail are my dream quail, so if I had something imported that would be it.

Finding a captive bred source would be the first step, I imagine. I saw a breakdown of costs recently for someone who imported 100 or so chickens. He detailed cost of the birds, transport to the US, rent for the 30 day quarantine at a USDA facility, feed while in quarantine, testing on the birds multiple times while they were in quarantine, etc. It was somewhere between $20-30,000. This was one of the original serama importers.

Funny, someone in Pakistan just posted pictures of his rain quail in a group I belong to. I had never heard of them before.

Rain quail and african quail are interfertile, they have different calls. I raised button quail, african quail and jumbo coturnix at the same time. I think the harlequin quail have great potential for egg production. They were only about twice the size of the button, but the egg was maybe 80% the size of the jumbo. I guess that’s why they hatch out in 15 days. Any idea how animals in quarantine are feed. Do you feed them or do they feed them for you?
