If you want to sell directly to a feed store you have to be NPIP. And depending on your state in order to sell at a trade day you may need some kind of permit for that as well. Craiglist I have found lots of pictures and updating your add as often as possible helps a lot. I am surprised you had trouble selling Lavender orpington, that is a breed that most are looking for. What month was it that you where selling them?

What are some breeds that most people are interested in? I have 7 lavender Orpington hens that I bred last time.

I don't know anything about breeding/breeds, other than what I read here on BYC, and my own very limited experience. Going on that.... the less common color of Lavender versus Buff for Orpington might be a selling point. Read some of the threads here, or post one of your own, and ask people what they are looking for.

I would be mindful of rules/regulations (Craigslist or otherwise) because you do not want to get into trouble. I read a blog post in which a woman ordered some seeds that are prohibited from shipping to/from certain places, because they can carry diseases that could wipe out entire crops. The local ag authorities found out. They came to her house, took her plants, AND removed six inches of topsoil, all at her expense.

October. Most of the time places like TSC and Rural King aren’t selling chicks at that time so I thought they’d do pretty good, but I was wrong.

I will definitely ask my AG teachers what the rules and regulations are for my state and neighboring states. That would be TERRIBLE!

I will mention that my lavender orpingtons are definitely not high quality birds. I bought them on impulse and had no idea how terrible they looked in person (my dad drove to pick them up for me). I’m thinking about investing in some high quality breeding stock, but I’ll have to wait until spring for that.

@ChunkyBirb, where are you located? Unless you're in the south or the southern hemisphere, fall in the US might be a hard time to sell birds. Hatching eggs might be different; notice all the Hatch A Long threads here, even now. I for one wouldn't be getting birds except in the spring/summer, because of the weather here in Michigan.

Any livestock auctions or poultry swaps near you?

This past summer I hatched out mixed breeds from my flock. All full size. So, my only marketing I could use on the box of chicks was "Straight- run, Full-size breeds" and their hatch date. One sale, in the middle of summer, I got $1 per chick. But the other sales were $2.50-$3.50 per chick. Of course this is a pretty low-key way to sell, just have to get them to the auction house the morning of the sale. The auction house takes their cut, but I could wait there for cash (from the auction house) or they would mail me a check. Another nice aspect of this was that I could also bid on various things there (they sell a variety of non-animal stuff) and they would take out what I purchased from what I earned selling chicks. So, that worked for me.

However, if you want to get more $ for your chicks, then you need to have what is desired in your area. Maybe the market is for started pullets, if you have the room to grow them out. Maybe the market is for blue/green egg layers or for high production breeds. But, generally to be able to become successful, then you need to be known as selling good and healthy chicks that grow up well and produce well. If you are having a breed to sell then it should look like a good example of that breed.
