I want to hatch eggs with my kids at the preschool I teach in but sourcing eggs when you don't speak the language is very hard. I am going to check out my supermarkets (there are 3 within 5 minutes of me) to see if any of them are fertile but if anyone knows of a more reliable source, I would love to hear about it. Thanks muchly.

FYI- I'm in Hokkaido

Figured I'd update. One super market down, plus an egg specialty store. No joy. I did find what looks to be a more local (maybe JA?) store last night so I am going to check it out now that it will be open. We also had a brainwave to check out the zoo (giving them ANY money makes me sick) to see if they'd sell us some eggs.

Also, we do have an end game for the chickens so that is not an issue, finding them IS!

Wow do I feel like an idiot. Had my boss write an internet search. I found a few places that might sell eggs? Also some Japanese Quails.

Having a problem finding chicken specific places. Most of them sell a profusion of pets and I don't feel comfortable supporting the Japanese pet industry in all its exploitative glory. I did find one or two places that I am marginally comfortable with and that will just have to do.

How does chicken keeping work in Japan, like for poultry hobbyists? Do they maybe have internet groups like this one where you could find eggs?

I honestly have no clue. If I was literate in Japanese, there would have been a much more comprehensive search. As it is, I had to rely on pictures and my limited understanding of a few kanji. The ones that looked like they had chickens in decent environments will be inspected further by my japanese boss to see if they sell hatching eggs ^^;;
