After reading this book http://www.amazon.com/The-Small-Sca...&qid=1343749168&sr=8-1&keywords=harvey+ussery I'm totally on board with using the deep litter method for my coop. My understanding is that I need to use a lot of high carbon 'brown' material in the litter to counteract the high nitrogen chicken manure... but since I'm starting to build the litter in the middle of summer I don't have a great big pile of leaves to use as a base.
What else can I use until fall, when I'll be sure to beg borrow and steal all the dried leaves from my neighbors?
