Where to purchase chickens

Quote:
Well different people have different thoughts on noisy. Like Old english game bantams are said to be noisy by some people because they talk a lot. Especially when they see you. but i don't exactly classify that as noisy, i say "talkative" because it's not too loud (though they can be at times).

I guess if you wanted good pets, that are alright layers, with a sweet personality. I have heard Brahmas are alright, bantam orptingtons, Silkies are supposed to be as well (but not as good layers on the silkies). Another breed you could consider are the Seramas, but they're not exactly top layer list and keep in mind that bantams except the heavy breeds will lay pretty small eggs. About half/1/4th the size of a normal large fowl egg (depends on the eggs you compare).

If you check out Feathersite as the OP suggested, check out Henderson's Chicken Breed chart as well. It lists many breeds, tells you if there is a banty and/or standard size, size, colors, hardiness, egglaying and behavior in general. I don' have banties, I have 3 GLW's that look like small tanks and one EE that appears smallish compared.....I had one Faverolle and she was the sweetest chicken. I know SF's come as banties too...

Have you tried looking at a craigslist near your town? I'm originally from San Diego and had no idea there were so many chicken people out there until I joined BYC. You'll probably be amazed how many there are around you. You can always order from a hatchery or buy an incubator and eggs and hatch your own. All of my chickens originated from craigslist posts.

As for noise, my only bantams are silkies and they're not too noisey. However, they are very broody and this can cut into your egg production. The Henderson Chart is what I used to pick my flock. Except for my BR who likes to complain, everyone's pretty quite. Especially the australorps and the CM.

Also, I thought I wanted lt. brown eggs, until I saw green eggs and had to have one. Then my CM layed dark brown eggs, so I want more of those. Now I want a blue-egger too.

Hi, and

to BYC!!!

I live in Riverside, just a half hour from you when there is no traffic. I don't have any babies right now, but I do have some nice young started hens you may be interested in. They run $20 apiece and up.

Once you get your chickens you will be fascinated. I never knew there was so much to know about them! Anyhow, try to stay cool today. Supposed to cool off next week.

Patty
