WHERE YOU LIVE WHAT IS THE...

Along the Hudson, 1 hr north of NYC, Ossining, NY - 3 chickens per 1/4 acre. No specifics about roos.

My nearest neighbors (up on the ridge behind my house) like hearing my roo - they say it makes them feel like they're in the country. I'm happy and lucky.

I make sure he's in the coop until about 7:15 - 7:30. When he crows in the early morning it's muffled a bit by the coop.

We can have as many as we like, as long as they are "penned". Local nuisance ordinances apply to noise and smell, like they do to anything else. We are in a historic neighborhood with very close neighbors who have been very supportive. The woman at city hall I spoke to about whether or not we could have chickens was wonderful, she even offered to email me a copy of the ordinance just in case anyone hassled me. We are very lucky to live in a progressive area, without silly outdated anti-chicken rules.

The Town of Hanson is an agricultural town still. From the bylaws:

Farming and horticulture, including raising, harvesting and storing crops, truck gardening, cranberry bogs, grazing and poultry raising.

Agriculture and particularly cranberries play an important role in the founding of Hanson, it's where Ocean Spray Cranberries was founded and headquartered.

No neighborhood covenant where I live and a city ordinance that does allow 10 chickens. No specifics on roosters but the noise ordinance would cover that so I re-homed mine soon after he began to crow last year.

Westwood, MA:

Up to 10 hens on lots less than 40,000 square feet. Roosters must be 1,000 feet from all lot lines. $10 yearly "animal keeping permit" issued subsequent to an application that includes a site plan and measured drawings of your proposed coop.

The Board of Health inspects the coop on site and issues the permit.
