we finally finished the coop and the run.. put the chickens in their coop and opened the door to the run... at first they wouldn't come out then a brave one ventured out and they all came... well we waited to see if they would go in for the night and we found them all huddled together in a corner of the run so we had to put them to bed..... how do you teach them to go in at night?... and i want to let them out again this morning but it is supposed to rain hard later today.. i am afraid they will not get out of the rain? if you have any suggestions on training them to get back to bed let me know. ty

I've got one group that i just redid their coop and the youngest ones I have to put in every night. I"m hoping they just learn to start going in. I only had a couple last night that didn't go in on their own.

Took my teens three nights to go in. First two I put them in. Third I told hem they were on their own.. Next night they all went in on their own...
Depending on breeds rain shouldnt be a problem. Smaller and some fancy breeds don't do well in rain.. Mine love it they just keep doing what they do and are oblivious to it.. And just think of all the worms coming up in the rain..

I think it depends on breed and age. How old are yours? My EE were out of brooder at 7 1/2 weeks. I kept them in the coop for 2 days, then let them outside. Around 8:00 pm I sprinkled a little crumble on the ramp, had the three chicks working their way up. By 8:30 they were inside, huddled in the shavings. The next two or three nights, they were inside by 7:00-8:00, I would just close the pop door. Now they put themselves in by 8:30 or so. It's worked great for us!

Good luck.
