Where's the grammar police??

Is it laziness? or is it the mini-micro keyboards people are texting from?
None of us old farts (over 20) will speak "the" language in 10 yrs.

Can not argue with the above, life is too short, and a lot can be missed while buried in small things. As a man once said "can we all just get along".

I guess I'll try and put my two cents in before this thread gets closed.

I dislike seeing poor grammar and spelling, and one could say it's pet peeve of mine. But I don't blame the person with the poor grammar as much as I blame the state of our current educational system. It used to be that we had minimum standards for English language mastery before a student could graduate. Now many children are pushed through school without any mastery at all. And because we as a society constantly excuse this by saying "It's just not that important anymore", things will only get worse.

Language is a dynamic thing, it will always change and evolve. But we do people a disservice by not giving them a firm foundation in their native language.

I have to agree with you, it used to be the first thing a child learned in school was how to socialize with others. BEFORE being taught anything else. Obviously manners is no longer part of the curriculum.

I just want to add I find my life much more stress free when I spend more time trying to be a better person(more compassionate and understanding) than trying to change others. You will always find it frustrating that people just will not bend to suit you, but you CAN bend yourself to be accepting of others as they are.

I see no reason for the thread to be locked. I have seen nothing but some polite disagreement, unless disagreeing is not polite too.

Why are some folks anti-education? That doesn't make sense to me. Shouldn't we all seek to gain knowledge and better understanding of the world around us?

If I wanted to get a better job and I need skills and training, well then I would try to find that skills and training. To me, that's what education is.

Education can come in many forms -- I've gained an education about chickens just being on BYC! In fact I defy a chicken vet to answer half the questions being answered on this forum. BYC rocks!

There is nothing wrong with education, but my take JMHO is the thread topic was pointing at BYC forum grammar mistakes, nothing was mentioned about a job.

Where do I apply? How much does it pay? What are the benefits?

Just teasing

I think if we are annoyed, we should ignore it- though it irritates me to no end. It's not important that someone use correct grammar to me if they are simply putting a message out there on a forum.

If it's really bad, I won't read it, and that's the unfortunate consequence of putting less effort into what we are writing for others- some people don't care to read text without capitalization, punctuation, etc.

When it comes to a their/there/they're, too/to/two, its/it's error, I generally assume it's someone who never learned the correct form, and while I don't like to look at it, it's not going to make a whit of a difference in anyone's life that the wrong form was used here on BYC.

It's not for me to judge, not for me to care, and I simply go on my merry way. Life's too short to be upset by it! It's soooooooo not worth any derision or divisiveness within our lovely community of people brought together by chicken-interest!!

Let's get on with gettin' on and be delighted to have each other to share the chooks with, for Pete's sake!!

...and keep in mind, while I always try to go and edit my posts for mistakes, noting that I'm a grammar nazi, it's tongue-in-cheek, and it only applies to me! I don't edit others except when I'm paid for it!!!

dint feel like reading all 8 pages so i just skipped to the end

I had to lay off the policing. Too many hurt feelings and a deleted thread resulted from me being a grammar police.

I believe in, "teach by example". There have been many times that I've had difficulties understanding what someone has typed and their meaning behind the words. This has also happened to me when speaking with the general public or employees. My own husband is no longer allowed to write professional letters without me checking his sentence structure, spelling and grammar. I even have to watch myself as I have a tendency to use to many "thats" in my sentences. I will say, thank God for spell check.

The point of my story is that I don't judge others by what they type or how they speak so long as they don't judge me when I ask them, "Please say that again as I didn't quite understand your meaning the first time." However, I don't and won't dumb myself down when communicating with others. If they can learn something from listening to or observing how I structure my sentences or the words I use, so much the better. I have no problem explaining anything they don't understand.

I consider my time on this earth an education where we all have things to learn and we all have things to teach. Sometimes I'm a teacher and sometimes I'm a student. I always strive for excellence and still make my share of mistakes.
