Whew! Close Call with a German Shepherd

I am scared to death of German Shepherds! I work at city hall, and our police station is in the basement level. The officers park their cars and crack the back windows with the K-9's in there....and they are FIERCE! They bark and pace in the back seat of those cruisers. Not to mention they are HUGE!

My friend was bitten in the back of her calf by one when she was jogging.....The dog was in the front yard, unrestrained.....She had to sue them to get them to pay her medical bills, and then she was terrified by dogs for a while after that.

I do think that the owners of these large breed dogs often underestimate the agressive behaviors in new or different situations.....(Not all, but some people.)

SCARY! Glad everything turned out OK for you,
Sharon

You know, the ironic thing is that when we need protection from someone or something trying to harm us, we would appreciate that fierceness in a big dog. It's kind of like a catch 22 when it comes to owning big dogs. I'm not sure the benefits would outweigh the liabilites though. I think I'll stick with my pepper spray and a good hefty baton.

The dog was being a dog the owners were the problem. Unfortunately the dog usually pays the price.

About 20 years ago my wifes neighbor had a dog that killed my wifes colt when my wife was about 16 years old. The guy paid for the colt. A few years later it started killing the rabbits in the pens by biting at the wire under the pens causing the mama rabbit to kill her babies. I came to my then girlfriends house one day and caught the dog in the act. I was deer hunting at the time and well... the rest you can figure out.

I would not hesitate to shoot a dog killing any of my stock.

I was out(alone) for a walk a few weeks ago. I heard a warning bark and turned to see a big german shepherd heading right for me. I'm not afraid of dogs, so I just stopped and waited. The owner(woman) was sitting on her butt smoking. She uttered a"so and so come here," whichof course was ignored. I yelled "Lady come and get your dog." Apparently she couldn't get up with a cigarette in her hand so she jus sat there. Luckily the dog had proper breed character, circled me, decided I was insignicant and trotted off. I uttered several %#$@$# greetings to her and continued with my walk. I was just furious thinking about the lazy sow- what if someone else (not dog savy) was menaced by this dog? They could have had a heart attack or panicked, ran and got tackled by him but, the dimbulb owner didn't give a hoot.

i don't understand either why people think it's okay to take their dog to someone else's property, especially someone they don't know. i had a contractor come to lay a cement pad in the back of our property couple years ago. i look out and see his dog taking a dump in our backyard. i asked him to please keep his dog out of our yard, that we had chickens i hadn't let out yet, and i don't want them frightened. He seemed unconcerned, but let his dog out to run around our neighborhood instead. What an idiot.

i'm sorry for your frightening experiences, mamachicken888. Just glad everyone was okay.

It really is so aggravating when people bring their dogs to other people's places. We run a business on our property and it's not unusual for customer's to stop by and have a dog in the truck with them. I get so mad when I look out to see some dog taking a dump on my lawn! My husband always tells these people to keep the dog in the pick up and that I WILL come out with a gun if I see if after my animals. They always laugh at that but they do put their dogs in the truck!

It's also the main reason I ran hot wire around my coop and run. Several of these dogs have stuck their nose on the hot wire and left for home at top speed even though their owners were still here.

Ok I have to say something nice about German Shepherds. I have read the posts and I keep reading examples of bad temperment. I have owned, trained, shown, and loved German Shpeherds for 19 years. My dogs have never bitten anyone. They are approcable but aloof when you are new to them. My kids grew up with them and the dogs have never been aggresive to the kids. I did have one dog vrs goose incident when a goose who had developed the bad habit of biting and pulling hair out of the dogs went after a new Mom with 11 puppies. The goose bit the dog, as she had done in the past, but the dog heard her puppies crying in the house and killed the goose, one bite no mauling just snap. A good German Shepherd temperment is not vicious, it is not snarling crazy dogs, unless the dog thinks the owner or owners kids are in danger. I We had a female named Claire I raised her from 3 months. When my brother came in to my house drunk at 3 am this dog put herself between me and him, snarling growling and doing her job. When my daughter wanted to sleep in a tent on our property (2 acres) with her friends I said fine. That night I could not find Claire, looked called no dog. I went out with a flashlight calling and heard a rustling in the leaves, there was Claire. She had made a bed for herself half way between the house and the tent. She refused to come in, she simply thought I was nuts to let those kids sleep outside and she was staying with them. This dog had never spent the night outside before, she slept in our house. This is the correct temperment, guarding but not aggresive. now Claire has passed, and we have 3 other German Shepherds who run loose with the chickens and there haves never been any problems. Sorry this is so long I just had to try to stick up for my favorite breed. One more thing my Mother has a dog that has bitten many people, babies to 90 years old. It has attacked my child in my house, it did this in front of a German Shepherd puppy about 5 months old, the puppy went after the other dog. Neither dog was injured and the puppy saved my daughter a bite. My Mother's dog is a minpin, a tiny little thing that looks like a doberman. I have banned that dog from my home. Big dogs are not more likley to bite, they are just more likely to do damage when they do bite.

great post hit. GSD is my fave breed as well. A well-bred and well-trained dog of ANY breed is a delight to be around. A poorly bred untrained dog of any type can be a dangerous nightmare

Very true. Sounds like Claire was an awesome dog. My son was bit in the face by a cockerspaniel. It was my Aunts dog. She said my son should not have looked at it's face. I have been bit by a BishonFrise. All dog's can bite. I have 4 and never say they will not bite. I say it all goes back to breeding and raising. And there is good and bad in all.
