Whew... we did it! (Somewhat graphic description)

coolness i would agree that good pair of game shears are very very helpful
also you can get good knives at rummage sales for butchering. all mine are second had then i use for birds if the get broke dropped, bed what every no big deal
I used to split the breast with a meat cleaver now i just cut the meat off with a fish fillet knife quicker and less mess

Thanks everyone!

I'm more than happy to share! We had our first chicken dinner tonight. Just the breast pan fried with some salt and pepper. We wanted to taste the chicken as much as possible. WOW! I never knew chicken actually had FLAVOR! My first bite was like, did chicken pan fried in nothing other than olive oil and salt and pepper actually taste that good?

It was tougher than store bought chicken, but I actually really enjoyed the texture. It had substance! The flavor of it just shocked me. Whoops, I'm starting to ramble. It was really, really good!

I'm thinking we'll try the thighs tonight on the BBQ. Yum!

This is the first time we've had chicken in almost a year because we won't buy it from the store. Now I just need my pullets to start laying eggs, then we'll really be set! My cornish X gals haven't laid any eggs in several weeks. I miss those delicious fresh eggs! We won't buy them from the store either so I guess we'll just have to wait! *taps foot impatiently*

Well done you

I have a knife sharpener that has a handle with two ceramic rods to draw teh knife through. Every 6 cuts or so I run the knife through it and when I am done I chuck it into the dish washer. Keeps a super sharp knife in my hands the entire time I am processing chickens or a pig

Oh, and long handled loppers are the best for chopping things up! But having said that I will be cutting the breast meat and the legs and wings off for anything I dont want to roast whole from now on so might not need them any more for chickens lol

*adds good knife sharpener to mental list.* Thanks!

Loppers, you say? (LOL I had to look it up) we have something similar to those, just with shorter handles. Geeze, I never even thought to use them. Thanks for the good idea!

You guys are great! Thanks so much everybody for your awesome suggestions!!!!
