I think the difference is location, location, location. Southern California has a lot of people that just want a very few pullets. They want them to look pretty, and they want the eggs to look unique. They don't want the moral pressure of dealing with a rooster, so I have a 100% no questions asked return policy for any roos. I will either give their money back or another bird of comparable value (to what they spent on the original bird) If they bought a $10 chick, they don't get a $30 hen just because they grew out their roo a bunch. I would give them $10 credit toward a $30 bird, if that makes sense.
Another reason some of my eggs sold high is because of the combo of breeds i had to choose from. People could combine orders and save a bundle on shipping, and get better hatch from a bigger, heavier package of eggs. The breeds I had or have now included Bourbon Red Turkeys, Midget White Turkeys, Blue Bearded Olive eggers, Barred olive eggers, BBS silkies, White Showgirl/Silkies, Dark Brahmas, Copper Black Marans from Wade Gene/Ron Presley, and BBS copper marans from Bev Davis, Mottled Javas, Mille Fleur Cochin, Lavender Orpington Project.
Other varieites I am adding for next season are Coronation Sussex/Light Sussex, Blue Laced Red Wyandottes from Barber, Foley, Paul's Poultry and Katy's lines. Working on Ameraucanas in BBS and lavender (blues split to lavender, so a lot of breeding and unravelling of the puzzle to do there) Black Jersey Giants, Auburn and Sweetgrass Turkeys, possibly bantam BLRW, wating to see how they grow out... so people get a lot of hard to find varieties to choose from and save on shipping is partly why they sell for more, not that they are particularly worth more.
