Thinking of getting a couple of dozen checkens for the homestead. The primary breed I am looking at is the White Rocks. The primary purpose is for eggs. Secondary purpose is for meat. Are they a good chicken for cold weather? The temps around here in the winter hit below zero several times a year.

If there is a better breed for my purpose what say ye?

I was wanting Red Jungle Fowl but in this weather I don't think that would be a wise idea.

If your winters are that cold I might consider a breed with a rose comb or other non-single type comb. If you want both eggs and meat definitely go through a breeder and not a hatchery. Some breeds to consider would be Rose Comb Dorkings (Yellowhousefarms is on this site and an excellent dorking resource), the Chantecler, Rose Comb Rhode Island Reds, and Buckeyes. There's other breeds as well but that's a start, spend some time in the dedicated breed threads (there are also threads for heritage and homesteading fowl that are a wealth of information) and good luck.

Wyandottes are Rose Comb breed, nice layers and meaty. They go broody sometimes and are available in hatcheries and few breeders offer Show strain.
