Which breed for egg laying but also friendly

Me, too! My sex-links are my best buddies as long as I have food in my hands

They are my oldest chicks, started laying at 16 weeks.

My 3 EE's are also sweethearts...they run to Mamma when picked on by the older chicks. They hop on my lap and rub their faces on me. No eggs, yet...

Give them love and they will love you back. Good luck!

My Barred Rock is super friendly, great with kids, not flighty as all. She stands up to my 60 pound pitbull and he runs lol! And Rocks are GREAT layers and hardy hardy hardy.

I also have 1 Wyandotte who is soooo sweet, she cuddles in my hands and is just a real sugarpie. I don't know how typical that is though, seems the Barred Rocks are more surefire in personality and laying

Well...they aren't the most consistent of egg layers, they eat too much...though they can be sweet.

I cull pretty aggressively for egg laying and my BOs didn't make it past the first year of production while the rest of the breeds of the same age are still going steady at age 3. When I processed them they were rolling in fat...could explain why they were not ovulating properly.

First choice: Sex-Links (especially Ideal's "Gold Sex-Links" and McMurray's "Red Stars").
Tied for second choice: Barred Rocks (especially Ideal's and Cackle's, NOT McMurray's), Easter Eggers, and Rhode Island Reds.

Buff Orpingtons are good fall/winter/spring layers, but NOT summer layers. Broodiness is a constant battle during the summer! If my entire flock consisted of Buffs, I wouldn't be getting very many eggs right now...

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get your Buffs from? I'm always eager to learn where NOT to get a certain breed. For example, I'll never get McMurray's Barred Rocks again, as they've never been excellent layers for me. However, their Red Stars are AWESOME for production...

My RSL started laying at 18-19 weeks. They are so so cuddly and sweet too. Oh, and pretty, and lay a lot of eggs and you know they are girls!

I like my Barred Rocks too, but they are feisty. The two BR pullets make sure they stay at the top of the pecking order. They even beat up on my roos from time to time.
