Which Breed Should I Get?

We live in soCal where the temperature in summer can get over 110 degrees and winter is about 50. I like orpingtons, but we think our last one died from heat. So then we thought black australorps. would those work? also White Leghorns? any other breeds are open for suggestion.

wish list:
1. good layer
2. friendly
3. heat tolerance

Rhode Island reds are a good option
Also bared rocks

Wow! we got those two 4 weeks ago. would any of the breeds i suggested be possible?
(i wanted the orpington/australorp, and the leghorn is in the local feed store)
