Which breed to choose?

Have at least one Easter Egger, for the green eggs, and they are nice birds. Then, Speckled Sussex are beautiful and friendly, and an Australorp would be nice. Wyandottes, any color, are all nice birds too. An Orphington would be a good choice too. How about a French Marans for those dark eggs? And Chanteclers are very nice winter layers.
So many choices! Get a variety, and see who you like.

I dont know if it was just the ones that we had but every Americana that I have had has been kinda dumb always getting lost and the roo would go into the weeds and a few moments later emerge with her, but that's probably just the ones we had

I think Orpingtons, Sussex and Wyandottes would be good choices. They're cold hardy and calm.
I love my Easter Eggers, but they're a bit flighty.

Welcome to activity here at BYC, and good luck in reestablishing your flock. Understand that other than with the sex linked breeds (comets, red stars, etc) there is always a chance of getting a cockerel even among sexed chicks..
