which breeds are smarter?

Hummm well I gotta agree that polish are not shining examples of inteligence. Cochins are running a close race with the polish though.
The campines on the other hand are pretty sharp on figuring out ways to get into the feed room. The production reds have the most cunning and Sultans are most skilled at walking into walls.

My Australorps are always inquisitive, the first to see what I'm up to. As a group they're my favorite just for this reason. I don't think they're dumb...they are the last to go in because they don't want to go in. I think they're very mellow, but not dumb. Don't have any Campines.

Well in terms of problem solving ability I think my Black Sex Links are the "smartest". My Australorp is sweet but dumb as a post. I love her though (I think she's my favorite) and she was the only one "smart" enough to bed down when a dog came into our yard as chicks and survive..... One of my Easter Eggers is quite smart and the other rivals my Australorp in the brains department.....she gives the cutest dumb blonde looks and like her not so swift flockmate is very predator weary! Perhaps there is a connection. Intelligence vs Instinct.

How do you measure chicken intelligence? What standard do you use? Are there chicken IQ tests?

All of mine are smarter than everyone else's IMHO. Doesn't matter the breed they are just more intelligent. I'm sorry but that's just the way things are.

I agree that Polish chickens don't seem very bright. Out of the chickens that I have interacted with thus far, my Buff Orpingtons are the "smartest." They have a good sense of awareness of what is going on around them when they are free-ranging.

My austrolorpe and ameraucana are incredible. Henwyn, the austrolorpe, comes when I call her, knows her name and responds to " Henwyn, what's this?" Sophie, the EE, or Ameraucana, not sure which, is very smart. We have a ritual that we go through when she wants attention and repeats it until I pick her up and love on her. I agree that polishes and extremely sweet, but since they can't see, sometimes seem a little doofy.

I have a real mix and they are all different in their personalities. The Queenie (barred rock), definitely "smart" and a leader. Sweet, insecure little PomPom (Polish) is low on the pecking order and always at my heels (I need to give her another trim, that seems to help). Big Red (New Hampshire) is also gentle and a little shy. Mrs. Puff and Pretty Girl (mixed Ameracaunas) are the most aggressive, will actually peck at me for food and constantly looking for trouble. The smartest of all though is my diminutive Seabright (Silver).
Quite clever and sweet!

Well, msfarmboy, I think that doofy is actually quite a bit nicer than some other things that could get you into REAL trouble, so doofy may actually end up SAVING yer buttocks! Glad you liked it!
