Well, for one, it's hotter than hell, so there's that. For two, the ground is like concrete. For three, COVID and Russia have made everything more expensive. Everywhere. Also, if you're like me, you're only one person, so it's a miracle what you got done by yourself is still standing.

Put a sprinkler on the area and water it periodically for days before you dig anything. I promise it will help.
