I'm glad you told me to dump the pools while I had the gosling.
My mom recently got a pair of geese that had a gosling that was pretty young still. She came out the other day to found it drowned in 2" of water. 😭
It's awful. Mine are big enough now they can have them but I have to rescue them occasionally. They can't get out and I hate putting blocks in there that I have to pull out to dump them.
How on earth???
They are very small and they get chilled and can't move. Then they go under and drown.

It really puzzles me how these little waterfowl manage to drown in the smallest bit of water🤔
In the wild they dart down beneath the water and hold onto aquatic plants for safety. I also let them swim in pools and bathtubs for fun, and they all come out just fine.
But when a toddler plops my duckling into a water trough for no more than three minutes the little guy drowns😭

I've had chicks drown in the water bottle in the brooder. Sometimes it just happens no matter how careful we are.

Unless they are with their mothers and being waterproofed, there's the largest part of the problem. I do find waterfowl babies to be much hardier outdoors than chicks for instance, but if they get wet and can't get dry and warmed up they will chill and die.
