For example, in our parents' time, they used to shave moms in labour to reduce chance of babies contracting infections. Turns out that actually increased the risk of infection.
I thought you meant their heads at first and I was like "why would shaving your head help prevent infections there?"
 
I could also write a paragraph, but won't.

It can happen, but is not all that common. That it happens is as much due to poor maternity health care culture as anything else.
In my case my water broke almost 7 days previous to when I went in and the docs missed it. I won't state the reason I went in (concerning symptom), but that doc tested me and told me my water had broke. They induced me and I was having full blown contractions from about 8 p.m. until around 2 p.m. the following day when they finally decided to do a c-section. That birth was so traumatizing that when they gave me the option for natural birth for my second one, but stated that they'd rather perform another cesarean, it was an immediate "Cut me open" from me.
