I think it just depends on where you work if it is a paid day off. In the US, Fed government you are going to get it. I would think most if not all State government you are going to get it. Other than that it depends. I’m taking it off today and getting paid but I’m not getting paid for it because it is a holiday but because I chose to take it off and get paid.
Hospital so someone has to work. Our Clinics and home health are shut down but can’t shut down a hospital. You don’t get holidays off period but you get ETO (earned time off) but it would be up to your schedule or your Director if you get off if you put in for it and if you have the time in your account. The only ones that get certain holidays are the Directors and we get Xmas day, thanksgiving day, Independence Day, New Year’s Day. Everyone gets their birthday Director or not. You don’t have to take your birthday exactly on it but are encouraged to take it in the month. Same with the Directors taking those holidays. You don’t have to or may have so much going on you can’t. But the hours just get dumped into your account. You take them when you can or you don’t.
The normal employee working today is not getting extra pay. The only way they would be is if they are over 40 hours for the week which is possible. If a Director is working today we are salaried anyway so no extra pay.
Confusing? No. My explaining of it confusing? Probably
 
The thing is you have to meet Wage and Hour laws under Dept. Of Labor

I don’t think there is anything in there that says you have to be off on a holiday or get paid extra for it. You do have to be paid extra if you work more than 40 hours in a week. Then they can get by that if salaried for managers etc.. or contracts

We get good Friday, fourth of July, labor day, Thanksgiving and the Friday after, Christmas eve and day, new years day and a floating holiday which people usually take on their birthday. And vacation time.
In louisiana they don't have to give you anything except overtime which we can work all of that we want. Just last Friday I worked 4 hours over

Ours instead of getting holidays you acquire “earned time off” so the first 5 years of employment you earn 5.9 hours every 2 weeks. After 5 years it goes to 7 point something every 2 weeks. After 10 years it goes to 11 point something. Doesn’t go up after that. Then directors get 40 more hours a year dumped in their account and everyone else gets 8 more hours dumped in their account.
This time is to be used for sick, vacation or whatever.
I have no idea why there is not even numbers on what you earn instead of like 5.9 or whatever
 
That's not accurate. I know several myself included that's not government that is off and paid for it. Off tomorrow too with pay. One of those use it or lose it vacation days off.

Banks are the best. All federal and state holidays. Kinda miss that. Don't miss the garbage work conditions and corporate politics though, so there's a trade-off
