Hardwood floor, with a softer carpet-like layering, and right now it has about 4" of shavings over it (they kicked out the other 3", and it's now in the run ).

Ok so you want to do deep bedding, not deep litter. Deep litter implies a dirt floor and everything self composts within the coop.

With deep bedding you keep adding shavings until it's about 12"+ thick, and clean it out once or twice a year. Is your coop tall enough for that?

Earwig and carpenter bee season has ended.

Stink bug and spider season has begun. I'd much rather keep the earwigs than trade them for stink bugs.

We log cabin peeps mark the seasons with bugs. I'm used to it all. I just hate stink bugs. They're like little drunk helicopter pilots. Only instead of crashing and burning, they crash and stink.
